Description Tajpur is the latest addition in tourist map of Bengal. The prime attraction of Tajpur is its pristine sea beach fringed with a dense forest of tamarisk trees. The beach is infested with infinite number of red crabs which play hide and seek in the sand. Their presense makes the beach look crimson. There are fishermen's villages in the visinity, where one can observe the mundane life of fisherman. Just 1 km away is a lagoon with a pleasnat surrounding. [-] HOW TO REACH.Tajpur is 170 km from Kolkata. It takes three hours to reach Tajpur by car. If you love adventure, the sand and the sea, and weekend trips that will take you far from the maddening city crowds, Tajpur is the new place to be. Just a 5 hour drive from Kolkata (and that includes stopovers for breakfast and tea), Tajpur lies on the way to last decade’s popular beach haunt – Digha. In the last few years, following the exhaustion of tourist possibilities in Digha, West Bengal has witnessed the emergence of quite a few other coastal tourist spots. If I say Shankarpur and Mandarmoni, you will definitely know what I’m talking about. However, having already been to these places on a number of occasions, we were on the lookout for something a little less explored, something that still had the smell of fresh sea breeze, the feel of untrampled sand. And also, a hint of adventure. Needless to say, it was in the course of this search that we learnt of Tajpur. This small beach is about 177 kms from Kolkata, and is at the place where a river meets the sea. The mohona is perhaps the reason why you have such crazy waves here. Like Chandipur, the sea at Tajpur recedes and advances at different times of the day. Since our group comprised mostly working people, we decided to start out early Saturday morning. As you can imagine, getting 19 people together at 6 o’clock in the morning is quite an achievement in itself, but nevertheless we did set out at the stipulated time and with a short breakfast stopover at the Kolaghat Azad Hind, we made it to Tajpur around 11-11.15. Although there are a few other hotels in the area, we’d chosen the Tajpur Nature Camp since it was closest to the beach. In fact, we’d booked the entire resort for ourselves. Way to the beach A bunch of crazy young people can’t be kept too long away from the sea, so we just dumped our bags in the rooms and hit the water. But before I get to that, let me tell you about the rooms. You can’t exactly go to a small, recently discovered beach and expect 5-star facilities, but the rooms and service at Tajpur Nature Camp were quite a welcome surprise to us. There were 9 cottages in all, 5 of which were in the shape of tents. A comfortable stay for 3 people, each room came with an attached bath. The only problem you’re likely to face here is the electricity. This hotel and the neighboring areas do not have electricity facilities yet so they have to make do with power generators. But then these are not kept on all through the day. We didn’t face much of a problem because the entire weekend we were there the weather was extremely pleasant. So, you have to be either lucky and get the good weather with you, or wait a couple of months till the electricity problem gets sorted out and the rooms are fitted with air conditioners. Food is the other great thing at Tajpur. On Saturday we had a full course Bengali lunch followed by slices of mango, an evening snack platter including French fries, chicken pakora and yummy pomfret bhaja, and a chicken menu for dinner that left most of us incapable of budging from our seats. And when we thought we couldn’t bite a morsel of food any more, we were told that the next day’s breakfast featured luchi and alu dum while lunch meant chingri machher malaikari! Now lets come to the best part – the beach and the water. It’s a secluded beach and since we didn’t spot another soul there, it was almost like having a beach to ourselves for our very own private party. The wind was amazing and the hide-and-seek game of the moon and clouds made the sea look more beautiful and exotic than any of us had ever seen it. We spent the entire evening out on the beach – an evening that could not have been better spent! Next morning we woke up to the sound of rain pouring down all around us, and the collective magic of the rain water and sea caught us in a spell we are not likely to forget in a long time. So let me tell you once again – if you think the sea has lost its charm, rest assured that one trip to Tajpur will turn you into a believer all over again! By the beach P.s. There is a parasailing opportunity at Tajpur too, although we were not lucky enough to be able to get a taste of it. Going Tajpur is only 177 Km from Kolkata the best option to be there is a private car. beach walkers Board a Bus from Esplanade (Kolkata) & get down at Balisahi after Chaulkhola. The hotel can arrange for a transfer at extra cost. Otherwise you can drive your own vehicles towards Digha and drive up to Balisahi and then take the way of Tajpur. Route : Kolkata – Kolaghat – Nandakumar – Contai – Chaulkhola – Balisahi – (turn left) – Alampur (turn right) – Tajpur Distance: Kolkata – Kolaghat : 74Kms Kolkata – Nandakumar : 103kms Kolkata – Contai (Kanthi) : 156Kms Kolkata – Chaulkhola : 167Kms Kolkata – Alampur – 174kms Kolkata – Tajpur – 177kms Total Time Taken : 4 hours approx
